How Cheap are Volaris Fares?

My husband and I flew from Tijuana to Guadalajara last year for our anniversary for $39 each direction. I just checked the route we took for some random dates and there are tickets for $43.67 each direction right now.

Below is a fare I found at the time of writing this article. $51.67 from Tijuana, Mexico to Guadalajara, Mexico. Finding round-trip airfare to Mexico for about $100 is something we can all afford and can truly be defined as Cheap Flights to Mexico.

I realize, everyone can’t fly from Tijuana! Here is a great example of fare from Pheonix, Arizona to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

What’s the Catch? Why Are They So Cheap?

Like many budget airlines, when you purchase a Volaris flight, you are buying the base fare. You will be allowed two carry-on bags up to 22 pounds in total weight for free. Other than this everything is an add-on to the basic flight.

This requires a mind-shift for many who expect several meals, drinks, pillows, blankets, etc to be included in an international flight. The Volaris philosophy is that you can keep the fare as low as you want or add on as many extras as you want. You can also choose between Volaris basic, classic and plus flight plans.

To keep it cheap, I suggest bringing an empty Water Bottle and your own meal and snacks. On our flight, we did just that.

My Volaris Experiences

Flying with Volaris from the Tijuana Airport

Because I live in San Diego, I can easily take flights from Tijuana, which is just over the border from San Diego. In fact, if you haven’t visited San Diego, you may be amazed to learn that from Downtown San Diego, it’s only 15-20 minutes to the San Ysidro border in Tijuana. The border closest to the Tijuana Airport is Otay Mesa which is also no more than 30 minutes from Downtown San Diego.

CBX Tijuana

To fly from the Tijuana airport, if you are coming from the United States, you go to CBX (Cross Border Express) in San Diego. It’s so simple. You buy a ticket to cross and then cross a walkway directly into the Tijuana airport.

Volaris check in Tijuana airport

Once you cross into the Tijuana Airport, simply make your way to the Volaris check-in. Like most airports, you’ll then go through security and make your way to your flight gate.

The biggest perk flying out of Tijuana is the amazing deals you can find on airfare to Mexico and all of Latin America. Volaris is leading the way with low-cost airfare.

Visiting Guadalajara, Mexico

Guadalajara, mexico

As I mentioned above, my husband and I flew Volaris to Guadalajara, Mexico last year.

Guadalajara is an amazing foodie town with lots of history, art, culture and great museums. It’s a great walking city with lot’s of street art, sculptures, and historic buildings.

Guadalajara, Mexico

You can also take a tequila train to the town of Tequila or take the Herradura Tequila train to their tequila factory. We opted for the Herradura Tequila train. It’s a full day excursion and includes the train ride, a tour of the factory, learning how Tequila is made, a Tequila tasting, lunch and a show with music and dancers. The train is part of the fun and of course, there were lots of Tequila cocktails!

Tlaquepaque, Mexico

One of my favorite things we did was visit Tlaquepaque; a quaint colonial town in the suburbs of Guadalajara known for their mariachi music as well as great art studios, wonderful restaurants, and beautiful cathedrals.

We also found a perfumeria while we were there and made custom colognes and perfume.

Visiting Huatulco, Mexico

Huatulco, Mexico

In March of this year, I worked with Volaris Airlines to visit the beach town of Huatulco, Mexico. Huatulco is in the state of Oaxaca. This was a trip with my son and was our first visit to the state. We loved Huatulco, which is a beautiful and safe beach city.

Huatulco is all about eco-tourism, nature and Oaxacan customs. They pride themselves on their efforts for sustainability, cleanliness and how safe the town is. In fact, if you are on the fence about Mexico or have never visited, this is a great town to visit first.

Huatulco sits at the base of the Sierra Madre mountains and sits on 35 kilometers of coast. There are 9 bays and 35 different beaches and some amazing snorkeling. They have lots of reefs, 12 different kinds of white coral 123 different fish species and seven endemic fish species to the area.

Tours in Huatulco

During our visit, we took a few tours with Paraiso Huatulco Tour Company. I highly recommend the Huatulco City Tour to get a real overview of the location. It includes stops at gorgeous viewpoints, including the lighthouse and many locations in downtown. We also stopped at a shop downtown to taste Oaxacan chocolate, several types of Mezcal and local delicacies like grasshoppers. We also visited a few shops where local craft people showed the process to make their textiles.

We also stopped at Inglesia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, a gorgeous church with the largest mural in the world of the patron saint of Mexico, Our Lady of Guadalupe

Paraiso Huatulco Snorkel Tour

Paraiso Huatulco Tour offers many other tours including a boat and snorkel tour. This tour departs from the harbor and is a day of fun and sun! The boat takes you out to different viewpoints, and of course, snorkeling spots at coral reefs. There is also a stop at one of the beaches for lunch.

Paraiso Huatulco ATV Tour

We also did an ATV tour. This is a half-day tour and you can choose from a morning or afternoon ride. The tour begins on a stretch of the Pan-American highway and then heads into the jungle. The drive continues to an agricultural area with dirt roads and farms growing pineapple, and papaya. And from there a ride out to Coyote beach and finally to the last bay in Huatulco.

Here you stop at Saint Augustine beach for lunch followed by snorkeling in the crystal clear water.

Why Volaris?

They are safe and cheap! They are paving the way and encouraging Mexicans and Americans to see more of Mexico.
