2nd Place Winner Prizes for 2012 Travel Writing Contest:

Sponsor: Adobe Guadalupe
Prize: 2 night stay at
Adobe Guadalupe with daily breakfast, 1 Hour Horseback Ride & Wine Tasting.

Adobe Guadalupe is a working winery, plus a bed and breakfast with six guest rooms. We are located in the Guadalupe Valley near Ensenada, Baja California. The successful wineries in the Guadalupe Valley today continue the tradition begun by the Russian immigrants who, arriving with their vine cuttings in 1904, planted the valley’s first vineyards.

The Guadalupe Valley is about two-thirds the size of Napa Valley and weather conditions there are quite similar to those in southwestern France. Grapes are looked after with the utmost of care, and the wines rival any produced in the new world.

We have 60 acres of vineyards where we grow Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Nebbiolo, Cabernet Franc, Tempranillo, Shiraz and a bit of Viognier grapes. We started our vineyards in 1998 and had our first harvest in 2000.

  Sponsor: Quinta Monasterio
Prize: VIP Tasting & Private Tour

In 2006 Valle de Guadalupe’s up and coming winemaker, Reynaldo Rodriguez Jr., joined forces with his winemaker father Reynaldo Sr. and partner Ronald Duhl to produce the first wine from their private label, Quinta Monasterio. Working with a wonderful piece of land and well maintained vineyards that had been handed down within their family for generations they were determined to create distinct wines of superb quality.

The new winery was christened Quinta Monasterio to honor the Spanish missionaries who first brought knowledge of wine production to Mexico, Rodriguez and his partners brought their unique expertise to the project of creating a world class label.

Reynaldo Sr., a highly respected winemaker known for being among the first in Mexico to produce 50,000 bottles of outstanding quality, contributed his deep understanding of wine making fundamentals to the process.

Reynaldo Jr. received his formal training from the Universidad de la Rioja in Spain where he earned a Master’s Degree in Enology and Viticulture.

A tour with Reynaldo Jr. or manager Eloy González are gracious hosts and will take you through the boulder walled, barrel filled wine cava and winemaking rooms. Next, it is off to the wine tasting room – gorgeously decorated with rich colors, chunky hacienda style furniture, and hardwood floors exuding the color of freshly pressed red grapes. They will demonstrate how to detect the various aromas and tastes unique to each grape and bottle.

Varieties: Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Franc; Red Blends: Cabernet-Merlot, Cabernet Franc-Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot
